Product overview

Dried fish fins are still used in some traditional Chinese cooking, mainly in soups, but for this product line legality comes before any commercial consideration. We offer fins only to buyers in jurisdictions where the trade is lawful, only from species that can be legally exported from the origin and imported at the destination, and only with documents that trace each lot back to its fishery. Where any of those conditions cannot be met, we do not quote.

Every lot is identified to species level rather than sold under a broad trade grade. Species listed in CITES Appendix II are supplied only with a valid CITES export permit issued by the origin country’s management authority, which under the Convention rests on findings of legal acquisition and non-detriment, and only to destinations whose rules permit import. Species listed in Appendix I are never offered. Where visual identification is uncertain, laboratory species verification is completed before a lot is offered.

Several jurisdictions, including the United States and Canada, prohibit the trade in shark fins; we do not offer fin products to those markets. Other countries and some regional authorities restrict landing, import, possession or sale in different ways, and these rules change over time. Buyers are responsible for confirming that import, possession and sale are lawful in their own jurisdiction before ordering, and we ask for that confirmation in writing.

We source only from fisheries where fins must be landed naturally attached to the body, or where equivalent finning bans are enforced, and each lot carries chain-of-custody records from landing through processing to export. Our export and quality assurance page describes how shipping documents are handled, and an export specialist can review eligibility for a specific destination before any quotation is issued.

FAQ

Specialty Fish Fins (Lawful Trade Only): questions from buyers

Which documents accompany a lawful fin shipment?

At minimum a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and health certificate, together with catch or landing records that trace the lot to its fishery. For species in CITES Appendix II, a valid export permit from the origin’s CITES management authority is mandatory, and some destinations also require their own import permit or notification. Every document cross-references the lot number marked on the cartons.

Which markets do you decline to supply?

Any jurisdiction where import, possession or sale of fins is unlawful; the United States and Canada are examples where we do not supply. Rules can also differ between regions of the same country and change over time. Before quoting, we ask buyers to confirm in writing that the product is lawful where they operate, and we decline if that cannot be established with confidence.

How is species identity verified?

Each lot is first identified by visual examination against reference material. Where fins are processed or identification is uncertain, DNA-based testing is arranged through an independent laboratory before the lot is offered. The confirmed scientific name appears on the commercial documents and, for listed species, must match the species named on the CITES permit. Lots that cannot be identified with confidence are not sold.

Do you supply species listed in CITES Appendix I?

No. Appendix I species are excluded from our range without exception. For Appendix II species, the export permit must be valid, issued by the origin’s CITES management authority and accepted at the destination, and each permit covers a specific consignment. Buyers should allow time for permit processing and check whether stricter domestic measures apply in their own market.

How do you rule out finning in the supply chain?

We buy only from fisheries whose rules require fins to be landed naturally attached to the body, or that enforce equivalent finning bans, and we rely on landing records and chain-of-custody documents to link each lot to a compliant landing. If that link cannot be documented for a lot, it is not offered, regardless of grade or availability.
